Base44 Prompt Conflicts Cause Contradictory Code

Base44's AI agent treats your full chat history as context and tries to satisfy every prior instruction simultaneously. What's happening

You ask base44's AI agent to add pagination to your records list. The agent reports success. You test it: the first page shows 20 records as requested. You scroll, expecting page two. Instead, the page already contains all 5,000 records, just hidden behind some scroll-triggered animation that fires erratically. The pagination is there. The full-list-fetch is also there. They are both there because two weeks ago, in the same chat, you asked for "show all records on one screen." The agent never forgot that instruction.

This is the prompt-conflict failure mode. The base44 changelog calls it out as a documented error class — "Prompt Conflict Error — Contradictory Instructions" — and users on the feedback board describe it in different words: features that contradict themselves, code that does two things at once, behaviors that change depending on which path executes first.

The deceptive part is that the agent's individual responses look fine. Each new instruction generates plausible code. The cumulative effect is incoherence — the codebase becomes a layered cake of conflicting decisions, each made when an earlier decision was forgotten or partially honored.

Why this happens

Base44's AI agent receives, on every prompt, a window into your chat history. The model is trained to satisfy user requests. When the chat contains two instructions that pull in different directions, the model does not stop and ask which to follow — it tries to honor both.

Three mechanics make this worse on base44 specifically.

First, long chats are encouraged. The base44 UX presents a single ongoing conversation per project. Users iterate by adding to the same chat over days or weeks. Each new message inherits the full prior history. There is no first-class affordance for "start fresh" or "discard prior context" — though both are possible by opening a new chat.

Second, the agent does not announce conflicts. A well-designed AI assistant might say "earlier you asked for X; now you're asking for Y; these conflict — which do you want?" Base44's agent rarely does this. It produces code that satisfies both requests, leaving the user to discover the conflict at runtime.

Third, code accumulates rather than replaces. When the agent edits an existing component, it tends to add to it rather than rewrite. A field added two weeks ago and a contradictory field added today both end up in the schema. Two competing handler functions both end up in the file. The runtime executes both. How to reproduce

  1. Start a fresh base44 project. Build a records list page with a basic display.
  2. In the chat, ask: "Show all records on this page in a single scrollable list."
  3. The agent generates code fetching all records and rendering them.
  4. Continue working on the project for 20+ unrelated messages.
  5. In the same chat, ask: "Add pagination to the records list, 20 per page."
  6. The agent generates pagination code without removing the all-records fetch.
  7. Inspect the resulting component. Look for both .list({ limit: 9999 }) and .list({ limit: 20, offset: ... }). They will frequently both be present.
  8. Confirm that runtime behavior is incoherent — pagination renders but the underlying state holds all records.

Step-by-step fix

The fix has two parts: untangle the existing conflicted code, then change your prompting habits.

Part 1: Untangle existing code

1. Identify the conflicted feature

Find the component, page, or function where contradictory behavior shows up. The most common signs: a list that does both pagination and full fetch, an auth check with both grant and deny branches, a form with two competing validators.

2. Inspect the source

Open the component. Read it end-to-end. List every behavior it implements. Mark the pairs that conflict.

3. Decide the canonical specification

Pick the single coherent behavior you actually want. Write it as one paragraph. Example: "The records list paginates at 20 records per page, with previous/next navigation. No 'show all' option."

4. Open a fresh chat with the canonical spec

Start a new chat in the project. Paste the canonical specification. Ask the agent to rewrite the conflicted component to match exactly. Do not reference the old chat.

5. Replace the code wholesale

Have the agent generate the new component. Replace the old file entirely. Do not let the agent merge — merging re-introduces the conflicts.

6. Test the rewrite

Confirm the new component behaves coherently. Watch for any leftover state in adjacent components that depended on the old behavior.

Part 2: Change your prompting habits

7. Use one chat per feature

Start a new chat for each new feature or significant change. Re-prime the agent with a one-paragraph project summary plus the specific feature requirement.

8. Retract explicitly when changing course

When you need to change a prior decision mid-chat, retract the prior instruction explicitly:

"Forget the previous SDK approach. Discard all code and prompts from earlier in this chat about data fetching. From now on, all data access goes through the REST API."

This is more effective than just adding new contrary instructions. It gives the agent permission to ignore the prior instruction.

9. Avoid open-ended chats over long periods

A two-month-old chat with 200 messages is a guaranteed conflict generator. Archive old chats. Start fresh. Re-prime the agent with the current project state.
